A new two euro coin will be put into circulation in France from January 1, 2022, to mark the occasion of the French presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The coin was unveiled by France’s minister for European Affairs Clément Beaune on Thursday (December 9).

It is engraved with an oak and olive tree, representing strength and wisdom.

"This two euro coin is important, firstly because it is the first time since the euro coins were introduced in French and European wallets at the beginning of 2002 that we are changing the design in France,” Mr Beaune said.

He added that 2022 will also mark the 20th anniversary of the euro.

“The French, like the Europeans, are very attached to it, even more than ever,” he said.

France will take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for the first half of 2022.

President Emmanuel Macron outlined his ambitions for France’s presidency at the Thursday press conference. He highlighted issues such as the border-free Schengen, European defence, and new European models as his priorities.

“This is a rare moment,” he Tweeted about the presidency.

“In the EU 27, France holds the presidency once every 13 years. On January 1, 2022, we will have the responsibility of setting out ambitions for Europe,” he said.
