UK residents now have to be sponsored by French firms to obtain work visas to do the jobs, which means more of them are turning to EU citizens and residents.

Native English-speakers are sought-after due to the number of international visitors.

After the season closed early in 2019 and was almost totally cancelled in 2020, resorts want to recoup losses, estimated at €8billion. However, over the past two years many seasonal staff have found other jobs.

In Alpes d’Huez, as in other resorts, employers are struggling to recruit, with around 15,000 vacant posts in the industry.

Tourist office director François Badjily said: “We have not enough people to work in shops, hotels, catering and nurseries.

Salaries have been increased and seasonal workers also get board and lodging.”

Covid rules look set to be minimal, with masks required in lift queues and closed lifts but not while skiing or in open lifts.

One way to look for ski resort jobs is to Google “Maison des Saisonniers” and choose an area which interests you, or contact mairies.
