Act fast to benefit from this financial help to buy an electric bike in France

The government policy is coming to an end in the beginning of 2025

Currently government grants can help you purchase an electric bike but these are ending soon

Two government aids for buying an electric bike are ending in February 2025 meaning that there are only a few weeks left to take advantage of them.

The prime à la conversion (conversion bonus) allowed benefitters to receive between €1,500 and €3,000 when trading in a motorised bike for an electric one.

The bonus écologique (ecological bonus) offers between €150 and €3,000 depending on the type of bicycle (electric, mechanical, cargo) and the level of income of the recipient.

A decree has been published which ends the prime à la conversion entirely, stripping back the bonus écologique, including deleting the aid for two- or three-wheelers.

Who can benefit?

You must be a French resident to benefit from the bonuses and you must buy a bike from a professional vendor (it can be a second-hand bike).

Applications must be made within six months of buying a bike on the website primealaconversion.gouv.fr for the prime à la conversion and the bonus écologique, showing a valid ID card, proof of purchase and proof of income and a tax assessment where applicable.

Bikes to help those with a disability are also eligible for the bonus.

“This goes completely against what other countries in Europe are doing and also against what has been happening in France for the last seven years with the introduction of the first National Cycling Plan in 2018,” Virgile Caillet, general director of the Union Sport et Cycle, told 20Minutes.

The decision has been met with anger from other cycling associations.

Research for any local schemes that can help with the purchase of an electric bike.
