France has a strong cinematic tradition, with the nation being one of the forerunners of film-making.

This has continued into the 21st century and widened to include TV shows, including new series on streaming sites.

Every month we recommend films and TV series to help improve your French.

Watching TV is one of the simplest ways to elevate your language skills - and it has the added benefit of helping to immerse the viewer in French culture they may otherwise not come across in daily life.

The best way to engage with French film and TV is with both the audio and subtitles in French, but it can also be helpful to watch with English subtitles at first to gain confidence..

Bref

Bref is a cult French TV series that originally aired on Canal+ in 2011-2012.

The show revolves around the life of a nameless 30-year-old Parisian man navigating work, love, and social struggles.

Its charm lies in its fast-paced narration and relatable situations, with each episode lasting only about two minutes, hence the title Bref

Season one of the show became cultural phenomenon in France with its unique style and sharp humor.

After a long hiatus, a second season titled Bref 2 was released in February 2025 on Disney+, with the previous episodes also available to watch on the platform.

Super Mâles

Super Mâles is a new French series following the lives of four middle aged men and best friends as they navigate family life and personal crises.

Tout le Bleu du Ciel

This touching film is set in the south of France and follows Émile, a 26-year-old man diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Facing a grim prognosis, he decides to escape the hospital and embark on a final road trip.

He posts an online ad seeking a travel companion, which unexpectedly attracts Joanne, a woman dealing with her own secrets.

Together, they set off in Émile’s RV on a journey to discover the beauty of the region, with the landscape of the Pyrénées a focal point throughout the film.

Originally based on the novel of the same name by Mélissa Da Costa, it is available to watch on Netflix.

La vie devant moi

Set in wartime Paris, this film is based on the true story of Tauba Zylbersztejn, a Jewish teenager who hid in a tiny room with her parents to escape persecution.

The film focuses on the fear and resilience of teenage Tauba and her parents who remain hidden in the attic for much longer than anticipated, silenced and unable to move due to events in the city.

The story is told through the eyes of Tauba, offering insight into the constant anxiety faced by the family through the eyes of the teenager.

It is a new release, which you can find playing at cinemas.

Adieu les cons

Adieu les cons released in 2021 to widespread acclaim, winning several awards at the prestigious Césars.
