Letters: ETA online link for people transiting through UK to or from France

It is recommended to use the app to get an electronic travel authorisation - but this reader managed to apply without it

An ETA is now required at some UK airports when transiting

To the Editor,

Individuals researching the new ETA requirements for transiting through the UK (Heathrow and Manchester airports) will undoubtedly have been advised to use the gov.uk website to locate information about using (a) the UK ETA app for smartphones, or (b) the online portal for filing a web (PC-based) request for the permit.

The smartphone app is readily available on Google Play Store for Android and at the Apple Store for Apple. In my case, my Android phone's NFC code reader could not detect the digital target on the passport for fee payment, and I could not continue the enrolment process on the phone.

Unfortunately, references to the URL for the online version are few and far between. I located the URL with great difficulty, and successfully used it to obtain an ETA.

The necessary link is here. It works seamlessly, and the permit was delivered within an hour.
