Most of France is set for a wet week ahead with showers and full storms arriving.

The south-east will be hit hardest, with over 170mm of rain expected along parts of the French Riviera.

Temperatures will alternate regularly through the week.

Monday March 10

Scattered showers throughout the north – mostly in Normandy and around Paris – will be accompanied by grey clouds.

Whilst the morning will start calmly in the south with sunshine, storms are set to cover the Mediterranean coast and Pyrénées mountains.

They will bring rainfall to much of the south – with the exception of the south-west and Pays-Basque, which will remain sunny – and reach as far north as Lyon/Vichy/Limoges by the evening before petering out.

Rainfall will begin in the afternoon in the south-east, beginning a week of near constant wet weather for the area.

Conditions will alternate between drizzle and heavy rain until next weekend.

Weather warnings have been issued across the south as storms that moved in from Iberia over the weekend are still in place in the south-west, and Mediterranean storms hit the southern shores.

Storms last weekend caused forest fires and power cuts to several thousand homes in the south.

The storms will bring rain to the coast, and potentially thunder in the Pyrénées and Massif Central mountain ranges.

Rainfall in the affected areas will last throughout the day and likely well into the night.

The rain will not affect temperatures however, which will be at their warmest for the week on Monday, with a national average of 10.8C – around 2C higher than seasonal averages.

Afternoon highs will be between 12C and 15C in the north, 15C - 18C in the south, and up to 20C in the south-west.

Tuesday March 11

Falling temperatures will see morning sleet in the north followed by intermittent rainfall moving in from the English Channel towards the Loire.

Rainstorms will continue throughout the south – now hitting the south-west and Pays-Basque – and move as far north as the German border in the early afternoon.

The rain will lessen as the evening progresses but not stop completely, with showers still likely along the Mediterranean.

Heightened storm warnings are not yet in place but may be issued at a later time by state forecaster Météo France.

Spring storms can be deadly in the south of France, even when warnings are not raised. Several people died in 2024 due to a period of heavy storms, without the highest 'red' tier alerts being raised.

Many were caught by strong currents when attempting to cross flooded roads and bridges.

Wednesday March 12

Cool winds moving in from the North Sea will sweep across France, dropping temperatures to below the seasonal average.

The winds will also bring showers to the north, west, and east throughout the day.

Temperatures will struggle to reach above 10C in the north – the area most affected by the winds – and remain at around 15C in the south.

Wednesday will be the coldest day of the week.

However, in areas where the rain will temporarily cease such as Montpellier, it may reach close to 18C.

The south-east continues to face a risk of Mediterranean thunderstorms.

Thursday March 13

Similar conditions are likely on Thursday, with temperatures dropping further in the north as bitter winds remain.

Light showers are expected but rainfall should not be significant above the Loire.

The south will continue to see rain both in the south-west and along the Mediterranean - and rain may again reach up to Alsace.

Further thunderstorms in the south-east are forecast, bringing more heavy rain.

Temperatures will rise by around 1C/2C in the north, but drop by the same amount in the south.

Friday March 14

Forecasts for Friday are less certain, but further rainfall is expected throughout the south and centre with the south-east again at risk of storms.

Drizzle will cover France diagonally from Biarritz to the German border.

Rain is less likely in the north, particularly along the English Channel, although the cool winds will persist.

Temperatures will increase to be slightly above seasonal averages before they continue to climb into the weekend.
