BMW recalls around 64,000 vehicles in France over possible brake fault

A recall of 1.5 million BMW-manufactured vehicles worldwide – including around 64,000 in France – is underway, due to potentially faulty brakes. 

Potential faults in the electronics of the integrated braking system (IBS), provided by manufacturer Continental, are behind the mass recall. 

The IBS may not send out the correct signals, leading brakes to enter ‘degraded’ mode where braking is more difficult and not assisted.

A temporary freeze on delivery of new vehicles to dealerships has also taken place until the issue is resolved. 

Numerous vehicle types from different brands are affected: 

• BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, X2, XM, X5, X5M, X6, X6M LCI, X7 LCI, 5 Series, 5 Touring, 7 Series

• Mini Cooper and Countryman

• Rolls Royce Spectre 

The affected BMW and Mini cars (around 54,000 and 10,000 of which were sold in France respectively) were sold between June 2022 and August 9, 2024. 

If you own one of these vehicles, you should contact the dealership where you purchased it to find out what to do. 

Drivers will also be contacted by post, and in some cases, vehicles’ on-board information systems will also issue information about the fault and advise drivers on what to do. 

BMW initiated a similar recall in February, however at the time it was unaware of the scale of the issue, and believed only a few models were affected. 

The news of the current recall by the German company led its stocks to plummet by up to 7% in one day on the Frankfurt stock exchange. 

It is the latest in a series of recalls from manufacturers this year, including Citroën, Audi, and Peugeot.
