British campaigners win EU prize
Campaigners for British people in the EU were among those picking up prizes in Brussels yesterday for having helped European integration.
Brexpats – Hear our Voice – is part of the British in Europe coalition of groups and has many members in France. It was nominated by British MEP Jean Lambert for one of the European Parliament’s 2017 European Citizen’s Prizes.
Brexpats founder Debbie Williams said they won for work including providing MEPs with evidence on free movement issues, letter-writing campaigns and outreach to other groups. “Our sister group RIFT [Remain in France Together] provided most of the evidence on free movement that we used and in reality this is as much their award as ours,” she said.
She added: “I believe the important thing was shared values and cross border cooperation. We have had a great relationship with many of our EU counterpart groups in the UK and also we have tried to learn all about the EU and share what we have learned.”
The winners this year included 49 people and organisations, from 26 countries.
