Brittany man wins €1m on replacement scratch card
The original ticket was ripped so the shopkeeper replaced it with what turned out to be a winning card
When the man stopped by a bar-tabac in Guissény (Finistère) on his way home from work to buy a ‘Millionaire’ scratch card he won €10 so decided to try his luck with another card.
The second card was torn however so the tobacconist gave him a new ticket which was intact.
It was this third scratch card which turned out to be the winning €1m ticket.
“It’s incredible. Never in all my life would I have earned such an amount just through hard work,” he told local newspaper outlet Le Télégramme.
The man plans to use his winnings to renovate his house. He says: “It will become a place to bring together all of the people that are dear to me.”
The rising popularity of ‘tabac’ gambling in France
Earlier this year the Française des Jeux (FDJ) – operator of France’s national lottery games such as LOTO, EuroMillions and Illiko (scratch cards) – announced that it had earned €20.6bn in 2022, an increase of 8.7% over the previous year.
They put this increase, at least in part, down to the return to normal of points of sale for their scratch cards and lottery tickets.
The number of online lottery players has doubled since 2019 to five million, two thirds of which also play in person at the point of sale.
How to play the lottery
Lottery games can be played online and in person in France.
Lottery tickets and scratch cards can be purchased at a bar-tabac or newsagent.
Players must be 18 years old or over to participate in the lottery or any other forms of gambling.
