The sign aims to encourage more environmentally-friendly driving and road usage practices

Drivers in France are warned to watch out for a new road sign that aims to encourage more eco-responsible driving, especially in areas that are close to ecologically-sensitive zones.

The sign is a white square with a thick edge and a sun-like symbol in the middle. The colour of the edge and symbol is usually either an olive green, or mustard yellow. The sign is officially named ID 15c ‘reserve naturelle’, as referenced by the Journal Officiel, also referenced in these legal decrees, here and here.

Rather than imposing restrictive measures, the sign aims to encourage drivers to adapt their behaviour, and drive in a more eco-friendly way. The sign is mainly being installed on the outskirts of nature reserves and areas with threatened biodiversity.

Driving practices encouraged by the sign include:

  • Moderate speed in the vicinity of protected areas

  • More gentle and attentive driving

  • Ban on littering in designated areas

  • Ban on playing music that can be heard outside of your vehicle

  • Limiting the use of the car horn (except in an emergency) to preserve animals’ peace

  • Increased vigilance towards the surrounding biodiversity

The sign aims to remind drivers of the need to keep a balance between travel needs, and the needs of plants and animals in sensitive natural areas.

Environmental behaviours

More generally, drivers can also adopt other behaviours that can reduce harmful emissions and environmental damage, advises specialist website Autonews, such as:

  • Brake in advance and more slowly to reduce your fuel consumption

  • Maintain your vehicle regularly to optimise its environmental performance

  • Choose carpooling or public transport whenever possible

  • Adopt a smooth driving style and avoid sudden acceleration

  • Check your tyre pressure to reduce your fuel consumption

  • Do not litter, even in a picnic layby

  • Do not pick plants on the roadside
