French “Bake Off” creates gruesome Halloween cakes
The French version of the UK's Channel 4 “Great British Bake-Off” TV show has got a little spookier than its original namesake, after contestants were asked to create Halloween-inspired bakes.
The official date for Halloween is today, October 31.
The TV show, which is known as “Le Meilleur Pâtissier” and aired on the M6 channel in France, is entirely based on the original programme, but on the most recent episode, took a slightly creepier path, with its “Gateaux Ensorcelés” (“Bewitched Cakes”) theme.
There has never been a Halloween or “scary” theme on the Great British Bake Off (originally from the BBC and now on Channel 4), but that did not stop M6’s Le Meilleur Pâtissier from continuing with their terrifying tasks.
Contestants were asked to create cakes and bakes based around the theme of Halloween, and they carried it off with gruesome aplomb.
Examples included a sharing board of “severed fingers” with a blood-red dipping sauce; a coffin-shaped pie with pink and red “intestines” inside; cakes decorated with sugar “maggots”, and a cake that revealed “eyeballs” when you cut into it.
There was also a head-shaped cake with a pink “brain” hidden inside; an exploding “head”; and a white cake displayed with bloodied fingers, shards of sugar “glass”, and the word ‘HELP’ scrawled in red food colouring.
There was even a cake that aimed to look like a human brain on a plate.
The judges and contestants looked disgusted alike, but the judging revealed that despite some less-than-delicious appearances, many of the cakes and bakes actually tasted good.
It remains to be seen whether the UK version of the Bake Off - which concludes with its final episode of the current series this evening - will adopt the rather unusual theme in future...
