French DIY retailer offers to cut duplicate keys via photo service

DIY giant Castorama is launching a new service where duplicate keys can be ordered simply by taking a photograph using a mobile phone app.

The information engraved on the key is then sent to a key cutter for the double to be made. SecurKeys, which has partnered with Castorama for the initiative, claims a 99.6% success rate in getting the right key made.

Safety concerns are addressed by having the new key delivered anonymously to a point relais, where they can be picked up using a code. It means recipients never have to give their name or address to the person handing over the key.

Alternatively, the keys are sent to a trusted third party, again to remove any link between the key and its address.

SecurKeys launched in 2017 and set up a second firm, SecurClé, for the mobile phone service. Prices depend on the type of key you have and can range from €9 to €350.

“Because we are able to provide such good information and have bulk buying rates, we are much cheaper than local locksmiths, and also usually much quicker,” said Pascal Metivier, founder and CEO.

It also offers to look after copies of keys via a network of service agents, which can be quickly reclaimed when needed.
