A Kalashnikov assault rifle, three knives and a knuckle-duster were found hidden in the public toilets of the main train station in Nice yesterday (October 31) afternoon.

The weapons were partly concealed in the toilet’s false ceiling and were discovered by a passenger who informed an SNCF agent, police have told several media.

Transport security officers and forensic police combed the scene, looking for clues and taking prints in a bid to trace the weapons to their owner or owners.

The city centre Nice-Ville station, which is used by thousands of commuters and tourists every day, remained open. Rail traffic was not disrupted although a security perimeter was set up around the toilets.

Police confirmed the weapons are real, ruling out suspicions of a Halloween prank.
