To the Editor:

I read with interest your article regarding the need for an International Driving Permit (IDP) when hiring a car in countries outside of the EU, UK and Switzerland. 

I have had three holidays in the US during the last 15 years and have never had a problem hiring a car with just my French driving licence.

Admittedly I was not aware of the potential need for an IDP but on no occasion was I asked if I had one in the US.
