The far-left party, La France Insoumise, is calling for a wave of protests on September 7 against President Macron.

This comes as the left-wing alliance of Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP) won in July’s parliamentary election but has not yet been invited to form a government.

La France Insoumise is one of the largest and most vocal parties that make up the NFP, which formed in response to the sweeping victory of the far-right Rassemblement National in the European Parliamentary elections in June.

The NFP claimed victory in the subsequent parliamentary elections on July 7 but failed to win an absolute majority.

Since then, President Macron has held back on naming a new prime minister and rejected the NFP’s proposed candidate Lucie Castets on August 26, who had the support of La France Insoumise.

FranceInfo reports that Mr Macron wants to negotiate a political alliance between his own centrist alliance, Ensemble, certain members of the NFP, including the Socialist Party and the Greens, but not La France Insoumise.

Call for student protests

On August 27, La France Insoumise launched its call for a day of protests on September 7 against what it describes as ”autocracy of Emmanuel Macron”.

“The president of the Republic has endangered our democracy by refusing to acknowledge the result and refusing the Nouveau Front Populaire from government,” it said in a press release calling student unions and “groups interested in defending democracy” to protest.

A series of protests have since been announced around France, as well as in Germany and Canada. More protests are likely to be announced.
