A man in Bordeaux was caught riding an electric scooter at 60km/h - more than double the 25 km/h limit.
He was also going faster than the speed limit for cars, which is 50km/h on boulevards and 30km/h elsewhere in the city.
As it is not the first time the individual has been caught speeding, his scooter was confiscated by the police.
Bordeaux has seen a number of serious accidents involving electric scooters in 2023:
- In January, two teenagers (aged 17 and 19) who were riding together on a scooter at 50 km/h, crashed into a car. It is illegal for electric scooters to carry passengers.
- In March, an 18-year-old escaped unscathed after hitting a 64-year-old woman with his scooter. The woman was hospitalised due to her injuries.
Will scooters be banned?
Paris has already banned electric scooters after a referendum earlier this year, and it seems that other major cities might do the same.
It is not uncommon for people riding scooters to disregard the 25km/h speed limit, increasing the risk of accidents both with cars and pedestrians.
It is not necessary to have insurance, wear a helmet, hold a licence or take a test to hire scooters and they are popular amongst young people
Many companies offer city-wide rental schemes for just a few euros.
