Masks mandatory (again) in certain outdoor areas in Paris
It comes after a court ended a similar rule last week, stating the measure was disproportionate, excessive and an attack on ‘individual freedom’
Wearing masks is once again required in certain areas of Paris and the Ile-de-France region, just days after a similar decree was suspended by an administrative court.
Wearing a mask everywhere outdoors in Paris became mandatory on December 31 in a bid to stem the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid.
However, that rule was suspended by the court in a decision on January 13. The court stated that the measure was “disproportionate and excessive” and an attack on “individual freedom”.

But yesterday (January 17), the prefect of Paris Police, Didier Lallement, issued a new order that has been adopted by all departments in the Ile-de-France region, reinstating mask-wearing in specific places.
These include:
- Outdoor markets
- All gatherings of at least ten people
- Bus stops
- The vicinity of railway stations
- The entrances to shopping centres during opening hours
- Schools and universities when students are arriving and leaving
- Places of worship during services
