More wildfires destroy over 500 hectares in Corsica
Another set of wildfires has broken out in Corsica, with one particularly powerful blaze continuing to burn since Friday October 27.
The fire, which has so far destroyed over 500 hectares of land across the Haute-Corse, is in a mountainous, inaccessible and uninhabited region, which has made it difficult for emergency services to tackle, according to French newspaper Le Monde.
So far, over 200 firefighters have attended the blaze, which was caused by continuing drought and higher-than-normal temperatures for the current season.
The blaze was deemed to be so unpredictable that firefighters only began fighting it on Sunday night, despite estimating it to have started two days earlier.
Firefighters have been helped by a team of forestry workers, who took the somewhat unexpected approach of lighting a ‘counter fire’ that was under their control, in a bid to deprive the main fire from its major fuel source.
This latest incident is the latest to come from the region, which has seen over 20 reports of new wildfires starting in the past few days.
It comes just months after Corsica suffered from the effects of multiple wildfires over the summer with rising temperatures and bone-dry vegetation helping to spark multiple blazes that forced tens of thousands of people out of their homes and caused immense damage to thousands of hectares of flora and fauna.
