French low-cost airline Transavia will step up its activity at Bordeaux airport after the withdrawal of Ryanair, announcing new domestic and international routes. However, unlike Ryanair, none of these routes introduced by Transavia include the UK.

Ryanair is withdrawing from Bordeaux on October 27, 2024, in response to the airport increasing its ground fees.

This will mean the end to its flights between Bordeaux and London Stansted, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Manchester airports.

Bordeaux airport told The Connexion in June that the move was “the worst-case scenario” and could result in the loss 25% of its traffic, 1.7 million passenger trips and up to 90 airport jobs.

The loss represented an opportunity for rival low-cost carrier Transavia.

“The departure of Ryanair has enabled us to accelerate our strategy in this territory,” Transavia commercial director Nicolas Hénin, told Le Figaro, announcing seven new routes starting from winter 2024.

The expansion of Transavia bucks the recent trend of low-cost airlines closing their base or withdrawing from regional airports, which has seen Ryanair withdraw from Bordeaux, and easyJet closing their base in Toulouse and withdrawing from Paris Beauvais.

However, easyJet has not announced any plans to withdraw from Bordeaux and still operates its own routes to Bordeaux from London Gatwick, London Luton, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow.

Bordeaux airport has struggled with negative publicity after being awarded the label ‘worst airport in Europe’ in 2022 and 2023 by a German travel website based on reviews of its online ratings.

In 2024 Bordeaux climbed one place in the rankings.

The new Transavia routes from Bordeaux airport:
