Refusing to shake the hand of a male prefecture official cost a woman her right to citizenship as she had not “assimilated French republican values”.

The woman, from Algeria but married to a Frenchman, refused because of religious conviction. The prime minister then annulled her citizenship.
An appeal to the Conseil d’Etat failed as it ruled she had not accepted French values.
