Notaires and avocats offer free legal advice
FREE advice from notaires is available around France on Wednesday and Thursday next week – on trains, in cafés and in market places as well as more classic venues such as mairies.
This comes as there are also a few more days left to benefit from free advice from avocats (similar to a British barrister) at the Avocat dans la Cité event in Paris.
Next week is the annual Rencontres Notariales, when notaires go out to meet the public with advice on a wide range of legal matters, whether property, marriage and pacs or inheritance etc.
On Wednesday notaires will be on hand in seven selected trains on both legs of journeys including Paris – Calais, Paris – Strasbourg, Paris – Brest, Paris – Bordeaux, Paris – Marseille, Paris – Toulouse and Nantes – Lyon (see map at link below for details).
Then, on Thursday, notaires will be meeting the pubic in around 100 towns as well as offering free telephone consultations from 18.00 – 21.00 for those who cannot travel (call 3620 and say ‘notaire’). The meetings will be at venues ranging from the informal, such as cafés, to rooms in mairies and the departmental notaires’ chambers.
Talks and debates are also taking place in Paris which can be watched live on the internet via the Paris notaires’ Facebook page (registration required if you want to attend in person).
They include one at 18.30 on protecting vulnerable loved ones financially and at 19.45 on managing your money in a couple.

Meanwhile, if you have a legal issue that could benefit from an avocat’s help rather than a notaire, Avocat dans la Cité is continuing today and this weekend outside l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris and in Place de la République as well as (today only) certain other locations such as arrondissement mairies.
Broadly speaking, avocats can often advise on legally contentious issues, as opposed to helping with the everyday practicalities, such as drawing up marriage contracts and wills, in which notaires typically specialise.
