People in France giving more to charity in 2024
The most popular causes are medical research and animal protection

People in France are giving more to charity this year than they did last year (2024 vs 2023), a new study shows, with the average person donating more than €200 per year to charitable causes.
Each person is donating on average €15 more in 2024 than they did in 2023, for a yearly total average of €206 (around €17 per month), found a new Odoxa survey*.
This includes donations to associations, foundations, projects or directly to people in difficulty.

One in five (20%) survey respondents said they had made donations of over €300 in the last 12 months, compared with 11% in 2023.

Of the causes donated to, the most popular were:
Medical research and the fight against disease (39%)
Animal protection (29%)
Child protection (28%)
Aid for the sick or disabled (26%)
The fight against poverty in France (24%)
The Grand Est region is the only area where medical research is not the top cause; animal protection is the most common there.

The number of donations
Overall, when it comes to the number of donations in the past 12 months:
60% of people said they made the same number of donations as the year before
10% said they made more donations
30% said they made fewer donations.
The majority of those who said they made fewer donations said that they could not afford to give as much as in previous years.
Three in five people (61%) said that they had doubts about how their donations would be used. This was a growing worry against the context of increasing numbers of scams, they said.
Future giving plans?
In years to come:
64% said they would be more likely to give to people in difficulty close to them
50% said they would prefer to donate to local associations rather than large ones
10% said they would favour donations to political parties in the future.

*The Odoxa survey was conducted online from September 18 to 23, 2024 on a sample of 4,664 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over - by gender, age, education level, profession, region, and type of town or city. It was carried out for France Bleu and crowdfunding platform Leetchi.
