Drivers in the west of France were treated to a bizarre sight earlier this week as a camel was spotted along the side of a road.

The animal was spotted in the commune of Coëvrons (Mayenne) on Tuesday afternoon (October 1), with one driver able to take a photograph of the camel seemingly grazing along the roadside.

It was posted to a local social media page, leaving other residents baffled. A video showing the camel was also posted by the driver.

One local weather station shared a photo of the camel with the joke ‘Et après vous allez me dire qu’il fait froid en Mayenne ? Nos vaches ont bien changé’. (You want to say the weather is cold in Mayenne now? Look at how our cows have changed.)

The camel escaped when a travelling circus passing through the area stopped in a car park near the commune, reports local media Ouest France

The circus uses the area each year to take a small rest before continuing its tour.

Despite the bizarre scenes, the camel was recaptured by the circus without causing any harm or damage to property.

The local gendarmerie in Mayenne were not made aware of the incident until the camel was already back with the circus.
