Snow cannons to save glacier
Ski resort Les 2 Alpes is installing six snow cannons to transform molten water from its glacier back into dense snow to halt erosion.
Its glacier has been melting as a result of climate change, with a lake forming below. It has been losing 1-2m of ice a year because it is not retaining from one winter to the next sufficient snow cover to protect it from melting. Without this plan, which is a first for France, the glacier could cease to exist in 30 years’ time.
