Standard bearers sought for commemoration event in Èze
The Royal British Legion is seeking three standard-bearers for the commemoration of the escape of a group of RAF airmen from the Fort de la Revère in Èze, near Nice, this Saturday.
The standard-bearers will carry the flag of the Royal Air Force association as well as two other British standards.
A plaque will be unveiled at the event to honour the Church of Scotland Minister Donald Currie Caskie, who helped the airmen to escape from the fort in the summer of 1942. Overall Minister Caskie helped over 500 Allied service personnel to flee France. The plaque will be revealed by the President of the Alpes-Maritimes, the Mayor of Èze and the historical association Le Devoir de Memoire of Monaco.
The Monaco Scottish Dance group will be present to demonstrate traditional Scottish dances.
The event’s organisers have requested that those taking part arrive at the fort by 10.15am, ready for the event to start at 11.00am. No marching skills are needed.
All spectators are welcome. There are picnic tables available under the trees outside the fort for an al fresco lunch and a variety of different walking trails in the surrounding Parc Naturel Départemental de la Grande Corniche, a protected area that stretches from Col d’Èze to La Turbie.
If you would like to participate in the event as a standard-bearer please contact The Connexion via news@connexionfrance.com. No qualifications are needed to fulfil the role, although priority will be given to ex-RAF or ex-Navy volunteers.
