Batches of cooked ham sold at supermarkets Leclerc, Auchan, Intermarché and Casino have been recalled across France due to a suspected listeria risk.

The ham is made by manufacturer Brocéliande ALH.

The alert was issued this week by the government website RappelConso, due to a risk of listeria monocytogenes (which causes listeriosis).

People who have bought the ham are advised not to eat it, and to either dispose of it or return it to the original point of sale for a refund.

Anyone who has already eaten the ham and experienced symptoms of listeriosis are advised to consult their doctor and let them know they have eaten the ham.

The incubation period for listeriosis can last as long as eight weeks, so people should remain alert, it said.

Listeriosis is an infection that can cause severe issues in pregnancy or in people with a weak immune system (such as those with other conditions or currently undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy).

In most people, it has mild symptoms and goes away on its own, but symptoms can include a high temperature, aches, nausea, diarrhoea, and chills. It is diagnosed with a blood test performed by a health professional, and treated with antibiotics.

The recall is set to last until February 2, 2022.

Consumers can call the helpline on 06 60 36 63 96 for any other questions.
