Two Britons have been left seriously injured after their car left the road and hit a tree on a departmental road in Normandy on Saturday evening (January 4) .

The accident happened at around 20:00 on the D226, which passes through the Écouves forest in the Orne department.

Around a dozen firefighters attended the accident scene and the two people in the vehicle – a man, 30, and a woman, 26 – were taken to the nearby Alençon hospital.

Gendarmes were also called out and remained in place until around midnight.

A dog was found in the vehicle and is presumed to belong to the couple. It was unharmed and has been temporarily taken in by the local municipality.

Warnings over driving conditions

At the time of the incident the department was facing a heightened tier-three orange warning for snowy and icy road conditions.

However “no direct link has been made between this accident and the bad weather,” said gendarmes on Sunday, reports local media France Bleu

Seven road accidents were recorded in the area on Saturday night although none were fatal, the gendarmes said.
