Unstable weather and cooler temperatures are expected as summer gives way to autumn during the month of September, with the first half of the month forecast to bring “fairly typical interseasonal weather”.

Summer 2024 was cooler than the previous two summers, but was nonetheless warmer than average. Data from Le Figaro’s weather service La Chaine Météo ranks 2022 and 2023 as the fourth and second-hottest summers since 1900, while summer 2024 is in 12th place.

The month of June was particularly wet - with precipitation 20% above average - meaning that the droughts of previous years were avoided in many areas.

The outlook for September

The unsettled weather that has marked the start of the month is likely to continue for several weeks, with storms striking many areas.

La Chaine Météo describes this situation as “fairly typical inter-seasonal” weather for France.

The start of September will see overcast weather and showers as a stormy, low-pressure system covers most of France.

Météo France does not commit to the location or intensity of these storms, as their trajectory remains unpredictable.

However, Météo Languedoc suggests that the instability could lead to a violent rainstorm known as an épisode Méditerranéen or an episode Cévénol within the first weeks of september.

The following weeks will see instability continue in France due to the presence of a high-pressure system over the British Isles.

La Chaine Météo suggests that thunderstorms could be locally strong in several parts of the south and south-east.

From mid-September, with rain and wind are forecast for the northern half of the country, while no predominant pattern has been observed for the south, which could mean a return to stable seasonal weather.

La Chaine Météo also speculates that France may enjoy an Indian summer during the last weeks of September
