Warm temperatures are on their way… but another bout of storms will come first

Fierce storms will cover most of France at the start of the week, but will soon disperse to – finally – give the country a burst of summery weather.

The predictions of a clear and storm-free July 14 did not come to fruition, with dozens of departments facing weather alerts.

Below is a day-by-day rundown of what to expect from the weather this week.

Monday July 15

Powerful storms will still cover the majority of France, with only the south-east and Mediterranean coast free from adverse weather conditions.

Stormy weather will roll in from the north-west in the morning, bringing up to 55mm of rainfall to parts of Brittany.

A second storm will begin in the south-west and Pyrénées in the afternoon, with both of these moving eastwards and settling near the German border.

They will reach the peak of their intensity in the evening, when the cooler Atlantic winds clash with warm winds from North Africa already present in the area.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Grand-Est, and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions will be hit hardest, and close to the German border hail is expected.

Currently, Météo France has around 20 departments in the east on a tier-three orange warning for stormy weather this evening, and more than two-thirds of the country on tier-two yellow warnings.

These may be increased throughout the day as storms become more intense – you can keep up to date with the alerts via the official Météo France website.

Tuesday July 16

These storms will move into Germany and Switzerland in the early morning hours.

Warnings will remain until around 05:00 in Alpine departments, but will then be lifted, leaving the entirety of France free of any weather warning.

Rain is expected to continue in the Alps throughout the day – as well as in coastal Normandy – but elsewhere skies will be clear, and temperatures will hover around seasonal averages.

Wednesday July 17

Rain will remain in Normandy, although the rest of the northern coast will stay clear.

An anticyclone Azores wind will keep temperatures high south of Bordeaux and Lyon, with temperatures of 35C or more in Provence.

Thursday July 18

Temperatures will reach their peak on Thursday, as the warm winds continue to push into the country.

Some clouds are expected in the north of France in the morning, but otherwise blue skies and no rainfall is forecast.

The national average temperature will be almost 23C – nearly 2C higher than usual for mid July – and south of Bordeaux/Lyon, temperatures will reach between 33C and 36C.

Heatwave warnings may be raised along the Mediterranean coastline – where nighttime temperatures are expected to remain high – but are unlikely elsewhere in the south, as overnight temperatures will drop to 20C or lower.

Friday July 19

Weather conditions will remain almost identical on Friday, with high temperatures in the south, and highs of 30C or more in Paris and Rouen.

Coastal Brittany may see some rain, around Brest, but elsewhere skies will once again be blue.

Early predictions for the weekend are a sharp drop in temperatures, set to continue into next week, caused by rain and cold winds incoming from the British Isles, potentially bringing another bout of storms to central France.
