Would your UK passport be valid in no-deal Brexit?
If you hold a British passport and will be travelling to France after the expected Brexit day – March 29 – you are advised to check its expiry date as it may not be accepted to enter the country if it has less than six months' validity left.
The UK says that after a no-deal Brexit such British passports would not be valid to enter the Schengen area, including France.
In addition, it says that if you obtained extra months on the passport due to renewing it early last time, these do not count for this purpose. Those potentially affected could include Britons coming for holidays in France or to stay at second homes, or Britons who live in France and who will be travelling to Britain or elsewhere outside the Schengen area and then returning to France.
To be sure your passport will be valid you can check it at this link.
This issue does not apply if travelling entirely outside the Schengen zone such as from the UK to Ireland.
If your passport will not meet the rules you should apply for a new one here. The UK says it takes about three weeks.
Information on ways to obtain one more quickly (for British residents) can be found at this link. People who live outside the UK needing to travel urgently should instead apply for an ‘emergency travel document’.
