Reader Question: I will be over 75 by January 1, 2025. Do I have to do anything to claim exemption from taxe foncière?

Assuming you are subject to assessment for French income tax, there is an exemption from this if you aged at least 75 years and one day on January 1 of the calendar year in question, and your income levels are below certain levels.

Whether your income is low enough will be assessed based on the declaration you will make in spring 2025 for 2024 income.

To qualify in 2024, the level for a single person is €12,455 of revenu fiscal de référence (double for couples). This is a net taxable income figure that you can find on your avis d’impôt tax statement for a given tax year (for next year you can find the updated figure in the first article at tinyurl.com/tf-level).

If you qualify, normally the tax office should note this from information it holds and the declaration you will make.

If you have already paid instalments for 2025, these should be refunded. If not, you should contact your tax office to request rectification.

If you pay this tax on a monthly basis by instalments, you may wish to cancel these in 2025. You can do it via private message at your account at impots.gouv.fr or by calling the tax office number on your last bill.

You can also do it in your personal space on the tax site by clicking Paiments > Gérer mes contrats de prélèvement, then clicking on your taxe foncière contract.

Under Modifier ou arrêter vos prélèvements, click Résilier if you want to cancel this method (up to December 15 for it to apply as of January).

Alternatively, you can declare you will be exempt from the tax in 2025, in which case click Faire une déclaration de non-imposition

If you do this in the course of 2025, instalments already paid will be refunded (do this no later than June 30). In future years, payments will only be taken again if your income levels rise, so you become eligible to pay again.
