Covid-19: Contrôle technique extension
Reader question: I took my car for its CT ( contrôle technique ) before lockdown and it failed the test. It left me the usual two months to get work done but are garages open? Are the big car spare parts places open? If I can’t obtain replacements needed in two months, can I have an extension?
The government announced on March 23 that expired CTs will be tolerated for a period of three months, due to the coronavirus.
For heavy vehicles, it will be tolerated for 15 days.
Vehicles which failed the test and have to undergo a follow-up test also benefit from this extension.
Contrôle technique centres are on the list of activities which can stay open.
However, CT operators report that many have decided to shut. Garages are also allowed to be open but many have also closed to avoid taking any risk during the confinement period.
Some CT centres need to stay open for vehicles which have to continue to be on the road, such as ambulances or trucks.
The three month extension has been introduced to avoid motorists having to travel for CT tests and so allow them to stay at home. CT centres should thus be able to reduce their activity, and only expose their employees to necessary visits from essential vehicles.
