Former lake-side nuclear site building for sale in Brittany for €1
The old workers’ canteen looks out onto the power plant which is being deconstructed but also has a view of the Monts d’Arrée mountains
EDF is opening up a former canteen linked to its old nuclear site in Brennilis (Finistère) to people who would be willing to take the building off its hands for €1.
The electric company has been trying to find a new occupant who would be interested in repurposing its Maison du lac for several years.
The 1,600m² building was built in the 1960s, and had been the place where the 300 nuclear plant staff would eat their lunch. It is now a visitor centre where people interested in the old power station can find out more about its history.

EDF is willing to sell the building – described by the prefecture of Finistère as being an “exceptional site” – for €1, but the funds needed to convert and renovate it are estimated to sit around €1-2million.
The buyer must also be happy with living or operating near the nuclear site, which has been in the process of being deconstructed since 1997.
Having entered into service in 1960 and stopped in 1985, the plant is not expected to be fully demolished before 2040.
La Maison du lac may not appear particularly attractive on first glance, but prospective buyers may be interested to hear that it was designed by Marcel Roux, an architect who collaborated with the likes of Le Corbusier.
EDF has organised a visit to the building on September 22, between 09:00 and 17:00 for people who may be interesting in buying it. Those wishing to attend should email sp-chateaulin@finistere.gouv.fr with the subject line ‘AMI - Reconversion de la Maison du Lac’.

“In the heart of the Monts d’Arrée, in a remarkable natural environment facing the Saint-Michel reservoir, the main building [...] represents an opportunity for economic development which EDF hopes will benefit the region,” Finistère’s prefecture said.
People attending the visit on September 22 should bring their ID with them.
After this date, it will then be possible to register your interest in acquiring the site on this prefecture form.
