Is seasonal work possible in France under the 90/180 days rule?

Only some sectors are permitted to hire people without a valid work visa

Reader question: Can I carry out seasonal work in France in the period of 90/180 days without obtaining a visa?

If you are a non-resident with a nationality benefiting from a visa waiver for periods of up to 90/180 days in the Schengen area, then yes, technically it is possible to come and do a short period of seasonal work without a visa or residency card.

However, apart from in a few designated sectors, your would-be employer must obtain official authorisation to employ you, which – with the exception of a few work areas facing shortages (currently including agriculture) – means they must first advertise the job for three weeks via the French job centres network.

Authorisation required for most sectors

If any offers are received via this process, the employer would have to give justification for refusing these – for example that you are the only person with the right qualifications for the job. Once they receive the authorisation, they would forward this to you.

Due to these requirements, it is more common for French employers to undertake this for people who will be working more than three months. Having said which, a French temporary work contract can legally be issued for as little as one month.

Sectors allowing work without authorisation include sporting and cultural activities, and taking part in trade fairs and conferences.
