LIST: Key dates in 2024 for France’s property owner’s tax

Deadlines for the taxe foncière depend on payment method

Many people opt to receive notices for – and pay – the tax online

Notices (avis) for France’s main property tax (taxe foncière) will begin arriving for some owners later this month.

This tax is levied on all properties in France – including main and second homes – as well as land with no buildings constructed on it.

Unlike for the taxe d’habitation, which since 2023 has been exclusively levied on second homes, some exemptions from the payment do exist. You can read about them below.

This year, taxe foncière notices will arrive on August 28 for people who opt to pay the tax in one single instalment and receive their bill via their personal space on the French tax site

For people who opt to receive paper versions of the bill, it will arrive between then and September 20.

Some property owners choose to pay taxe foncière monthly – if this is the case, then payment notices arrive slightly later.

People who pay monthly and opt for online notices will receive this by September 20, and people who choose to have a physical version posted to them will receive it on or before October 9.

These notices provide you with information about the tax, including the amount you need to pay.

When are the payment deadlines?

Deadlines for paying the tax in one lump sum depend on the method you use.

For non-digital payments (via a tabac, a cheque, or cash payment) this needs to be done before October 15. Note this is only possible if the tax is €300 or less.

Otherwise, digital payments (online, through the Impots.gouv app) have a deadline of October 20.

If your bill is over €300, you can opt to split it into ten monthly payments, taking out around the 16th of each month between January and October.

However, the deadline to set this method up in 2024 was June 30, meaning you will have to wait until next year to do so (providing your bill in 2024 was over €300.)
