Reminder: How to find the best petrol prices near you in France

Drivers in France are no doubt familiar with issues around fuel this year after protests against the pension reform bill brought shortages to many service stations and prices at the pump are rising again.

Average prices for SP-95 petrol reached over €1.93 per litre last week and over €2 per litre for SP-98 (a different kind of petrol). A significant amount of the price is tax.

Although TotalEnergies have agreed to cap prices for fuel at €1.99 per litre for an unlimited duration – and the government is planning to pass a law temporarily allowing petrol to be sold at a loss – it can still be difficult to find good offers.

Below, we look at some useful links to help.

Map shows the cheapest station near you

You can use the interactive prix carburants map from the Ministry of the Economy, which compares prices of all petrol stations in mainland France.

It covers the cost per litre of all main types of petrol, including SP-95 and SP-98, diesel, GPLc, and E85, at every service station in France.

The map allows you to check prices across either the entirety of mainland France, or in your specific department – it also allows you to refine your search to include or exclude large, medium, and independent petrol stations from your search.

As the map comes directly from the Ministry of the Economy, the information included is updated regularly, and comes directly from information given to the ministry by fuel distributors.

This map also allows you to check fuel prices along a given route so if you are driving across France, you can plan where to fill up on your journey.

French media outlet has similar map

French media outlet BFMTV has released its own interactive ‘fuel map’, showing the cheapest petrol stations within each department for diesel, SP-95 and SP-98 petrol.

The map shows the three cheapest petrol stations for each type of fuel, meaning you can optimise your search.

There is also a search bar, where you can type in your department instead of looking on the map, to see the three cheapest stations in your department for each fuel type.

The link also allows you to type the name of your commune, where you can then compare the prices of all of the stations close to you, to weigh up the cost and distance together when searching where to next fill up.

The map uses information directly from the Ministry of Economy but is updated less frequently than the prix carburants map.
