Reader says the gendarmes did nothing to stop a dangerous dog

To the Editor,

I reported a German Pit Bull, owned by our neighbours in Dordogne. It took 2 weeks for the gendarmerie to come round.

It was at liberty to wander all around the cul de sac, not muzzled, not castrated. The young man has since moved house, thank goodness.

In another village, a friend's cat was shredded by three 'farm dogs'. The same dogs had already killed numerous pets in the village.

No action taken by the gendarmerie. They are pursuing it through the legal system themselves.

My own experience, here in Manche, a Rottweiler and Staffy cross, rampaged down our lane & across our land, my husband just managed to close our back door and get the shutters down.

Our dogs were obviously barking like mad, but the two outside were in a total state of frenzy, barking and snarling viciously.

Not until I discovered around seventeen dead and dying ewes in a nearby field, the next morning, did I understand just why the two dogs were in such a highly excited state.

What has happened? Nothing.

The owners were told to tighten their security. The don't even have a fence of front gates. The dogs are still alive and apparently it's not the first time they've escaped.

My friend in another village, similar, loads of cats & poultry killed. Dog owner eventually ordered to castrate the dog.

Frankly, the authorities don't seem to give a damn.
