Many French residents are in support of President Macron’s alliance with most of Europe in supporting Ukraine

To the Editor,

I am proud to be an American with a second home in France, and agree with every word of Fran Hardy’ letter (February 27, online) arguing that although this country has its problems, following the US is not the answer.

A nightmare has descended on America, much of the developing world and peoples suffering the worst kinds of aggressive invasion and ethnic cleansing on account of Trump and his cronies’ so-called America First policy. A policy whose real purpose is to channel foreign and humanitarian aid to make billionaires even richer.

Such policies hurt more Americans than ever before. They squeeze the middle class, increase poverty, homelessness and poor health. They trample the rights of women, minorities, workers, refugees and honest business people.

Even leaders of counties calling themselves democracies politely kowtow to Trump’s ravings and bullying outbursts in their public statements in the billionaire-owned press and social media. The only one who stands out by standing up to him is Ukraine’s President Zelensky.

Every one of my friends in France thinks Trump is a lunatic, his language that of a child playing godfather, and his coterie a squad of Mafia thugs.

They support President Macron’s alliance with most of Europe in supporting Ukraine and resisting even more Russian expansion.
