A week of rain and grey skies in the south-east of France has not prevented several areas of the southern Alps from experiencing a late snowfall, bringing pristine vistas to the valleys.

Storms are set to last throughout the week in the south-east, including up to the weekend, mostly affecting coastal areas.

Further inland however, thick snowfall has been recorded in several valleys, including near the Auron (Saint Etienne de Tinée) ski resort.

Around 15cm of snow fell near the resort – and up to 30cm on some of the highest pistes – leading to attractive views in the nearby village.

The resort shared a video of the fresh snowfall on its social media page, which you can find below.

Further snowfall is expected in the valley in the coming days – including tonight (March 12) despite the risk of storms at lower altitudes, which may provide a further set of spectacular views.

It is not the same story across other mountain chains in France however.

Two major resorts in the Pyrénées have been forced to close early due to a lack of snowfall this spring, around two weeks earlier than scheduled.
