Surprised social media users in eastern France have been sharing photos of an unexpected snowfall (since Tuesday, February 25), covering high altitude areas under a 20 cm white blanket.

The departments of Doubs and Jura (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté) recorded between 10-20 cm of snowfall this morning (Wednesday, February 26) at altitudes above 1000m, while two to five cm have been measured on lower ground at 700m.

At 06:15, it was snowing at altitudes as low as 500m, reports Météo Franc-Comtoise

Snow is expected to continue falling this morning, possibly reaching 20-30 cm at around the 1200m level.

Some ski resorts have partially reopened following the fresh snowfall. Hautes-Combes Nordic domaine (Haut-Jura) has announced that 70% of pistes will be reopening today.

The snow has caused a few minor road accidents and delays, notably between Nods and Pontarlier in the Doubs.

Road users in areas with altitudes above 900m are encouraged to take caution due to risks of black ice.
